Iraqi Special Forces unit, ISOF were created by coalition forces shortly after the invasion in 2003. Directed by the Iraqi Counter Terrorism Command, the forces have three brigades under its command. The Iraqi Ministry of Defense funds the Counter Terrorism Service. They have over 10,000 soldiers that specialized in anti-guerilla operations during the Iraqi War.
Colonel Khaleel Jasim Al-Dabbagh created royal special units during 1950s and that is when the first Iraqi army troops were first established. These units were mainly used in domestic affairs, rather than internationally, but were used when the country was at war. After the invasion in 2003, the Iraqi Forces were not useful, therefore the new forces were recruited from the scratch. In 2005 after the training with Green Berets and Jordanian Special forces, the ISOF had over 1,100 trainees, split into two combat battalions and two support battalions.
The first Special Operation Brigade is headquartered in Baghdad, with first, second and fifth battalions. The second Special Operation Brigade has four commando battalions of 1200 men, based in Basra, Mosul, Diyala and Al Asad. The third Brigade was created in 2013 in Basra and it includes regional commando battalions, recce battalions and support battalions stationed. The third Brigade is stationed in Basra, Diwaniya, Najaf, Maysan, Dhi Qar and Muthana province.
Nigh Vision Goggle Training was introduced in 2008, to the Iraqi Air Forces to teach foundation for the future counter-terrorism training.
